Formerly known as Madras, the cosmopolitan mega-city of Chennai is the capital of the Tamil Nadu state of India. Located on the shore of the Bay of Bengal, Chennai is the gateway of the south as well as the key regional economic, cultural and educational center. As a major economic hub, it has many prosperous industries and a high percentage of rich people. Chennai’s automotive and car components manufacturing industry supplies several international car brands. The city is a great market for luxury cars, gold and jewellery. Lenovo, Dell, Nokia and Siemens are just a few of companies that produce their electronics here. Pharmaceutical and chemical companies, information technologies and hardware industries as well as textile and train wagons production also generate revenue in the area. Two major sea ports handle a significant amount of international cargo and connect the country with the trading world. Other productive sectors are stock exchange and financial services (financial institutions of world importance operate from Chennai), and healthcare. With numerous quality hospital and healthcare services, Chennai receives almost half of its medical clients from abroad and a third is from other parts of India.
Tourists are drawn not only to the Ayurveda treatments but also to several other attractive features of the city. Tourists love Chennai because it is the safest Indian city (with half of the crime rate of other mega-cities), its perfect blend of modern and traditional, rich history, noteworthy heritage architecture (temples, UNESCO Heritage Site of Mahabalipuram, Indo-Saracenic style of administrative buildings), rich art and culture, many theaters and cinemas (hub for Tamil film industry), endless beaches and excellent leisure activities and attractions. Due to a mixture of all these factors, Chennai became home to a high number of foreign expatriates.
As a thriving economic and cultural hub, Chennai is a perfect destination for any business meeting, corporate function, trade show or company event. It boasts over 20 luxury hotels with over 4'500 hotel rooms, not mentioning the wide range of all the other types of accommodation, meetings services, business venues, resorts and clubs. The attendees will be impressed not only with the location but also with the available recreation activities. They can enjoy water sports on beaches, reptile zoo and wildlife parks, bird watching (over 300 species in the area), botanical gardens and green protected areas (Guindy National Park within the city), golf, boating, shopping in numerous malls, spa treatments and sightseeing.
Chennai International Airport (IATA code: MAA) is located 20 km to the south west from the city center and handles over 15 million passengers annually. The taxis typically cost between INR 350-500 depending on the distance of your destination from the airport and to the city center it takes about 30-40 minutes. Blue Dart Aviation, Air Costa, Spice Jet and Air Carnival are among the main airlines servicing the airport that also have their hubs there.
