Bordering with Hong Kong, the city of Shenzhen has developed from a small town into a huge metro area with 18 million inhabitants just in the last 30 years. Shenzhen (深圳) is closely related to Hong Kong on social and business levels and it is an important link between China and Hong Kong. The huge economic boom started in the 1990’s thanks to receiving a special economic status that attracted foreign investments and opened doors for start-ups, both local and foreign. As a major manufacturing hub of the country, Shenzhen is home to numerous companies and institutions. Some of the most successful home-grown high-tech companies are Coolpad, Konka, BGI, Huawei and BYO. Financial giants like the China Merchant Bank and the Ping An Bank as well as the Shenzhen Stock Exchange also have headquarters in the city. With a very long coastline and two bays, Shenzhen has a key container cargo port that is the third in the world in container processing.
The city’s economy is mainly driven by manufactures in industries such as chemicals, electronics, industrial and medical equipment, bio-technologies, pharmaceuticals, construction materials and telecom equipment. Due to the massive expansion, residential and business real estate development boomed accordingly. Today, the city skyline is filled with about 60 skyscrapers all taller than 200 m.
The ease of starting and doing business attracts many businesses and therefore Shenzhen is an excellent MICE destination.
